| Biography My wife and I are from Rochester, NY, but we have built a home near Goose Cove on the Cabot Trail and are Cape Breton residents for a minimum of four months each year. In real life, I am an emeritus professor of electrical engineering, having taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology for 19 years. On occasion, I dart into a phone booth and emerge as an artist/photographer, specializing in digital computer manipulations of my photographs. I’ve won several awards and, over the years, have done magazine covers, corporate ads, and greeting card designs. I’m also one of the founders of a burglar/fire alarm manufacturing company where I was a vice president of engineering for 13 years before leaving to teach. I’m deeply interested in the arts and have served on the boards of Rochester’s professional theatre and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. At RIT, I founded and continue to manage The Performing Artists Concert Series, now in it’s 17th season, which brings jazz and classical music to campus. In Rochester, I am a founding member of the Image City Photography Gallery, and am currently an Artist in Residence there. Now that I am retired, I have more time to devote to my lifelong love of art and its creation. I suppose that it’s inevitable that my professional life has had some effect on my art. I like to think of myself as a creative young senior citizen who brings years of corporate, academic, and arts experience to his work. I admittedly am prone to challenge what I consider foolishness and have little patience with mission statements, team building exercises and pretentious art-speak. To me, giclée is simply a good archival ink jet print! David Perlman July, 2011 |
